The image consists of and old photograph taken down from Koli hill, one of the most iconical landscape views that are part of the construction called Finnish nationalism. Less than 140 kilometres north-west is situated gigantic Talvivaara mining territory, which is easily the biggest environmental catastrophe in the history of Finland, and an absolute failure of control and a manifestation of total negligence. Nowadays, at the same time when the image of any given thing has become more important than ever, the actual and real things - such as pure nature - can be sacrificed at the altar of economical profit.
The same work as above, but colours printed in different order which makes the blue (one of the two colours in the Finnish flag) more dominant.

In the fall 2015 I did a project which aimed at contacting and interviewing some individuals of the more endemic population of finns and more recently arrived refugees, and to find common nominators and then create serigraphy works which mix and blend their stories so that the "differences" wont be noticed... since they hardly exist!
SYMBIOSIS
The core idea is simple: there is one planet Earth, so far the only one where the humankind can live. With the enlarging ecological catastrophe what we have created (that will in the next decades lead to major changes and threats to the environments where we have used to live), we are also living and creating wars, constantly. The more there is war, the less there is time for anything else. With war everything becomes harder/difficult, or even impossible.
Right now, as one of the wars happening, there is a full scale civil war going on in Syria, with foreign political and military involvements. In the war started in 2011 out of a population of 23 million people, 5 million have had to leave their homes and home country, of which 4 million are refugees.
210 000, almost 10% of the population has died so far in the Syrian civil war. ....
We here in Europe, in Finland are talking about a "refugee crisis". But is this talk about the crisis what the refugees themselves are having, or is it OUR westerners' crisis with the refugees? Apart from a bad economical situation (caused by stubborn inhuman economical politics, desperate efforts to save capitalism) Finland is still a wealthy western country with NO war on it's territory. WHY is it so hard to understand that some other people are in real need of help, WHY is it so hard to feel empathy towards them, WHY is it so hard to see that in the end they are just people like us? Are we actually having a HUMANITY CRISIS, instead of a refugee crisis?!
Making distinctions between "us" and "them" and expectations of problems to come, will eventually provoke and perpetuate problems. You know, a self-realizing prophecy. Distrust and disrespect will create distrust and disrespect. If we want to save ourselves, primarily we need to understand that humankind is actually a collective, remarquably more than ever in history with our population of 7,4 billion. This means that our problems are actually everyone's problems, which we have to start solving collectively. We need to start looking at problems in a constructive manner, to solve them and avoid creating new ones in the process.
When we encounter new people and new cultures to us, we have a choice to decide how to relate to them. We can either try to strive towards mutual understanding and consciousness that there are various ways to exist and to co-exist. Looking at new person equal to us lets us to see that WE can also learn something from them. Constructive interaction happens on a ground where nobody is put in any fixed position by others, and when nothing is assumed.
In my the work I want to give a voice to the universal humanism inside of us. Collect and pass verbal messages that emphasize undogmatic general humanism, collective responsibility of each other, build a link between "us" and "them" in order to make that division fade away, look for a clear, but philosophical, poetic form of anti-racism and anti-xenophobia.
I went and collected messages from quite random people in public places, such as railways stations, market squares, shopping centers, in front of refugee centers. I was hoping the questions that I would ask stimulated people to express ideas and ideals that would help in (re-) constructing a link between groups that could and should find more common ground, the ground that IS there, but which is just too invisible, forgotten, covered...

-"Enemmän pitäis tuoda esille se, minkä takia tää kaikki tapahtuu. Mitä on tehty, miten ne sodat on vaikuttanu ja ne pommitukset niihin maihin. Ja osaan maista on pistetty agentit valmiiksi, ne alkavat keskenään tappelee. Se pitäs tuoda esille hyvin voimakkaasti, että ihmiset tietäs että mistä tää johtuu, eikä se vaan MITÄ NYT tapahtuu. Ihmiset ei välttämättä tiedä syy- ja seuraussuhteita konflikteihin. Jotenkin se tulee itelle tosi... en mää edes mieti asiaa, mun mielestä se on kummallista et monet miettii sitä niin paljon ja ottaa sen ihan asiakseen. (Mistä se johtuu?) Ei oo tietoa, ja tietämättömyys lisää pelkoa ja ennakkoluuloja. (muukaisuus, muukalainen) Se on vähän kummallinen sana ylipäätään! kuka in keksiny sanan "muukalainen"? Se sana jo itsessään kalskahtaa tosi kummalliselle, et siin on jotain niin vierasta ja hyökkäävää ja tosi epäilyttävää. Tai ehkä siihen on istutettu niin paljon sitä. .... Jos ei niin tiedä paikkaansa itse maailmassa ja siinä omassa elämässä, ja sitten kun sieltä tulee muita ideota, näkemyksiä, kulttureja jotka saattaa olla vähän enemmän ...tai itseä tai omia näkemyksiä vahvempia, niin sit siinä voi ehkä moni säikähtää sitä. En tiedä, mun mielestä se on ehkä vähän epävarmuutta siitä missä itse on, iitsestään ja omasta elämästään. Ja sit sen lietsoo ulkopuolelle hyvin paljon. Näin mä uskon et se on aika monilla.
