SYMBIOOSIN MYSTEERIT /

Jäkälästä: vuonna 1879 biologi Anton de Bary määritteli symbioosin "ilmiöksi, jossa kaksi erilaista eliötä elää yhdessä." Tässä yhteydessä "erilaiset eliöt" viittaa kahteen eri lajiin. Jäkälät ovat elämänmuotoja, joissa sieni elää yhdessä joko levän tai syanobakteerin tai kummankin kanssa. De Baryn määritelmän mukaan jäkälät tulisi ymmärtää molempia osapuolia hyödyttävinä "symbioottisina" suhteina. Tämä tila on ratkaiseva selviytymiselle, joka perustuu yhteistyöhön eikä kilpailuun.

Tämän metaforisen pohdinnan kautta tutkiskelemme taiteilijoina yksilöllisen ihmisen keinotekoista olevaisuutta. Tuohon olevaisuuteen pohjautuvissa arvojärjestelmissä ihmishenkilöitä pidetään ylivertaisina. Lopputuloksena on irtautuminen siitä mitä kutsutaan "ympäristöksi".

Tällainen erottelu on ongelmallinen, olipa konteksti luonnollinen tai ihmisen luoma ympäristö, sillä kaikki on olemassa vain suhteessa johonkin, ja konteksti on sarja vuorovaikutuksia.

Loppujen lopuksi nämä näkymättömät verkostot ja yhteistyötavat ovat välttämättömiä elämälle maapallolla. Taiteellisilla pyrkimyksillämme korostamme jäkälien merkitystä, biodiversiteetin arvoa ja elintärkeää kunnioitusta itse elämälle. Monet jäkälät ovat riippuvaisia vanhoista metsistä. Itse asiassa jopa joka neljäs Suomessa esiintyvä jäkälä on uhanalainen, samalla kun tässä symbioottisessa elämänmuodossa on vielä paljon meille tuntematonta.

Piirrokset paljastavat usein näkymättömiksi jäävien hahmojen kauneutta ja monimutkaisuutta. Näyttelyllämme kutsummekin katsojaa pohtimaan uudelleen hallitsevia arvojärjestelmiä ja ryhtymään uusiin tapoihin suhtautua niihin; olla symbioosissa yhteisen maailmamme kanssa, jäkälöityä.

/MYSTERIES OF SYMBIOSIS

On the subject of lichen (/ˈlaɪkən/, LY-kən): in 1879, biologist Anton de Bary defined symbiosis as "a phenomenon in which two dissimilar organisms live together." In this context, "dissimilar organisms" refers to those of two or more distinct species. Lichens are life forms consisting of fungi living in tandem with algae, or cyanobacteria, or both coexisting simultaneously. Under de Bary's definition, lichens should be understood as mutually beneficial "symbiotic" relationships. This condition is critical for survival based on collaboration rather than competition.

Under this metaphorical speculation, the artists reflect on the constructed existence of the individualistic human. Under this construct, value systems deem human persons superior. The end result is a separation from what we call the "environment."

This resulting separation is problematic, whether the context is a natural or a human-made environment: everything exists in relation, and context is a series of interactions.

After all, these invisible networks and co-operations are essential for life on earth. Within this artistic endeavor, we highlight the importance of lichens, the value of biodiversity, and the crucial respect for life itself. Many lichens are dependent upon old-growth forests. In fact, as many as one in four lichens found in Finland are endangered, while much is still unknown about this symbiotic life form.

These drawings expose the beauty and complexity of often unseen bodies. The exhibit invites the viewer to reconsider the ruling systems of value and engage in new ways of relating; to exist in symbiosis with our world, to lichenize.

The title of the record was going to be "El Aire Libre Fuera de Los Dientes del Monstruo Tirano y Canibal", in English: (In) the Free Air/Freedom, Away from the Teeth of a Tyrannical and Cannibalistic Monster", so I wanted to express both the manifestations of that tyranny and the outbreak from it's teeth. Several parts of the drawing are based on photographs that I had taken from various spots: basilique Marie-Reine du Monde in Montreal, some underpass walls and choral-like formations on a seaside in Cuba.
